Visitor Information

Visiting The Museum

The Museum is located at the rear of the (former) Rochdale Fire Station, Maclure Road, OL11 1DN. The Metrolink ROCHDALE RAILWAY STATION stop is immediately outside, and Rochdale mainline railway station is approximately 100yds away. Buses to Manchester, Bury and Oldham also stop close by.

Happy museum visitorA pedestrian entrance gate is located opposite the tram stop on Maclure Road; for vehicular access please use the rear gate on Richard Street. (NB the postcode for the Richard Street entrance is OL11 1DU). Please note that Maclure Road and Richard Street form part of one-way gyratory traffic system around the fire station site.

The Museum is open on Fridays (except Bank Holidays) and on the first Sunday in the month (except January), between the hours of 10am and 4pm. Party visits are also possible at other times. Monthly open days often involve “themed” special events (see FORTHCOMING EVENTS )

No appointment is necessary for ordinary visitors but school parties or other groups are kindly requested to book in advance, even if intending to visit during “normal” opening hours. Please note there is normally a maximum group size of 30 persons. Unfortunately the Museum cannot cater for private parties such as birthdays.

Admission to the Museum for ordinary visitors is FREE, though there is a nominal charge per pupil for educational visits, as these incorporate teaching sessions and the use of additional resources (see OUR EDUCATION SERVICE).

German visitorsThe Museum is situated at ground floor level and, although compact, there is reasonable access for wheelchairs, buggies etc. Toilet facilities, including accessible and baby-changing, are available on site.

Ample free parking for coaches and cars is available in the yard on most days but may sometimes not be allowed during the larger, special events. On these occasions, there is street parking and car parks close by; please follow our temporary signs on these days. On-site parking for disabled drivers is always available however.

Hot and cold drinks and confectionery are available whenever the Museum is open, with home-made cakes or other additional offers on monthly open days.

Persons wishing to carry out research or to view objects presently in storage are advised to make prior appointment.

Mission Statement
