HERITAGE OPEN DAYS FRIDAY 13TH AND SATURDAY 14TH SEPTEMBER 10AM TO 4PM

ONCE AGAIN THE MUSEUM WILL BE JOINING IN WITH THE (NATIONAL) HERITAGE OPEN DAYS EVENT BUT, THIS YEAR, WITH AN IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE !   FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER THE FORMER ROCHDALE FIRE STATION BUILDING ON MACLURE ROAD WILL BE OPEN FOR PUBLIC ACCESS WITH GUIDED TOURS BY OUR MUSEUM VOLUNTEERS.  IN PREVIOUS YEARS WE HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO THIS IMPORTANT BUILDING DUE TO SECURITY CONDITIONS WHILST THE EMPTY BUILDING WAS STILL OWNED BY GREATER MANCHESTER FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE.  NOW, FOLLOWING THE DISPOSAL OF THE BUILDING BY GMFRS TO OUR PARTNERS ROCHDALE BOROUGH COUNCIL FOR THE PURPOSE OF COMPLETELY RESTORING THIS WONDERFUL 1930s FIRE STATION TO ITS FORMER SPLENDOUR AS THE NEW HOME OF GREATER MANCHESTER FIRE SERVICE MUSEUM, THERE IS A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE THIS ICONIC BUILDING BEFORE CONSTRUCTION WORK STARTS IN LATE SEPTEMBER. BY MID 2020 THE NEW MUSEUM IN THIS SITE WILL BE ALMOST READY AND VISITORS WILL BE ABLE TO SEE THE FINISHED PROJECT AFTERWARDS, BUT HERITAGE OPEN DAYS 2019 WILL BE THE LAST CHANCE TO SEE THIS BUILDING IN ITS CURRENT STATE. DON'T MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY.

PLEASE NOTE THE FIRE STATION WILL ONLY BE OPEN FOR THE HERITAGE OPEN DAYS EVENT ON THE FRIDAY AND SATURDAY DATES.  NO APPOINTMENT NECESSARY. THE BUILDING IS CURRENTLY IN A SLIGHTLY SAD STATE AS IT AWAITS COMPLETE RESTORATION SO PLEASE BE PREPARED FOR SOME SIGNS OF NEGLECT.  HOWEVER THE BUILDING IS SAFE TO VISIT AND NO SPECIAL CLOTHING OR FOOTWEAR IS REQUIRED. WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU THEN
